Pharmacy Supervisor

The Inpatient Supervisor will be involved in the independent practice of Pharmacy. In consult with the Chief, Pharmacy Service, the Inpatient Supervisor is responsible for the professional and the administrative supervision and management of the Inpatient Pharmacy personnel and programs in accordance with the guidance set forth but not limited to the Pharmacy Service policies and procedures, VA Regulations, USP, USP, and State/Federal Laws governing the practice of pharmacy. He/she will be under the administrative supervision of the Chief, Pharmacy Service, and, in addition to having a complete mastery of the functions, knowledge, and skills of the Staff Pharmacist, he/she must possess the additional management and clinical knowledge and skills in order to perform the following duties but not limited to:
Responsible for the professional and administrative management of the Inpatient Pharmacy to include the oversight of budgetary execution. Manages people, maintains effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperates with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals. Develops performance standards, performance plans and evaluations; assures that the Inpatient Pharmacy and programs that fall under that umbrella are compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements. Designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, makes sure they fully comply with all processes and policies and develops/maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. Uses systems thinking to participate in the development of and/or develops policies and procedures relative to the Inpatient Pharmacy. Responsible for planning, organizing and reviewing work, administering personnel matters and dealing effectively with employees and union representatives in accordance with the Master Agreements; responsible for developing a schedule, planning and granting leave and rotating duties of staff; projects overtime requirements based on work load and staffing; reviews staff performance for possible award nominations; initiates counseling, disciplinary actions and separations based upon performance. Reviewing, interpreting, and verifying medication orders for appropriateness; processing and filling medication orders; interacting with and making recommendations to other clinical staff regarding medication therapy ordered to ensure safe and effective care; reviewing the patient's medications, allergies, labs, and other pertinent information from the medical record to identify and solve medication-related problems; contacting providers as appropriate; Responsible for assuring patients are receiving adequate education and counseling about the safe and appropriate use of medications dispensed when appropriate for self-care patients in the homes. Is responsible for monitoring pharmacist participation in patient education activities and for providing suitable environment and drug references, which may be required to fulfill this function. Responsible to the Medical Center and the principal investigator for seeing that established procedures for the proper handling, storage, record keeping and dispensing of investigational drugs is properly implemented. Responsible for providing the staff pharmacists with information on the investigational drug as well as the dispensing procedures. Encourages staff pharmacists to increase their involvement in pharmaceutical, clinical, or institutional pharmacy research activities. Responsible to keep the Associate Chiefs of Pharmacy and the Chief of Pharmacy Section and other pharmacy staff members informed of administrative issues or information of clinical pertinence, which may impact pharmacy program effectiveness or enhance staff performance. Such information is generally documented on the quality assurance reports, newsletters, reading files, and staff meetings. Ensures that adequate resources are identified and are available to meet the needs of all Pharmacy programs. Provides input to pharmacy management relative to assessing the need for future plans for new programs, or recommending changes or enhancements to existing programs in order to better meet the patient and/or medical center needs for Pharmacy service. Serves as a consultant within Pharmacy Service and with other medical center staff in evaluating health care delivery to veteran patients. Assesses, plans, and evaluates Pharmacy programs to ensure the proper coordination between the delivery of Pharmacy services and the overall delivery of health care to medical center patients. Licensure. Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16. GS-13 Pharmacy Supervisor (a) Experience. In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs:
a. Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff. b. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. c.
